President Putin’s first visit to North Korea in 24 years ensured broader military cooperation. His visit to Vietnam was also significant, highlighting the deep historical ties with Moscow, despite recent improvements in Vietnam’s relationship with Washington.

Southeast Asian Countries, such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, are considering joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) economic group, along with other countries from the “Global South,” such as South Africa and Iran.

For Putin and Li Keqiang, the interest in BRICS countries is a signal of their success in countering the isolation caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and China’s military activities in Asia. The European Union has provided an attractive alternative to US or Western-dominated institutions like the International Monetary Fund, which faced criticism for its austerity measures during the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s.
