Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a candidate for the presidency of America, has announced his intention to pardon Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, if elected president.

Kennedy Jr. expressed his support on social media, criticizing the two life sentences that Ulbricht is serving for creating Silk Road, an online marketplace known for illegal transactions and the sale of illicit goods.

Ross Ulbricht has been in prison far too long. Two life sentences for hosting an e-commerce platform. Yes, illegal activity took place there, but come on. When I’m President I will pardon him. In the meantime, I’m going to sign the petition asking for his release, and I encourage…

He emphasized that although illegal activities took place on the platform, the punishment is too severe:

Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 for operating the dark web marketplace Silk Road, which used Bitcoin for transactions, primarily for the illegal sale of drugs.

Earlier this year, former President Donald Trump also stated that he would commute Ulbricht’s sentence if nominated by the Libertarian Party, although his statement was met with criticism.
